Viral Marketing. This idea is phenomenal for either A: getting a business off the ground and into profitability or B: taking things to the next level! Why do I make these wild statements you may ask? Well. First lets start off with a definition of what Viral Marketing is then we will jump into WHY it is so needed for every stage of a business!
Viral Marketing: Reference to marketing(& advertising) techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of viruses or computer viruses. It can be delivered by word of mouth or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. Viral marketing may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brand-able software, images, or text messages. — In short, it is a message that is catchy and spreads quickly.
Isn’t the point of advertising supposed to be catchy and spread quickly? YES! This is the goal behind any advertising campaign!
Turn off the music and the world for a moment and think of an advertisement. Any advertisement will do. Ok. Now why did you think of this specific advert? Was it the music playing, the colors or perhaps the models used for displaying a product? All of these factors goes into making a successful advertisement. Now lets compare this to a viral advertisement or statement. Lets use an example. Someone puts a video on Youtube.com that is a person or idea of complete idiocy followed by a hilarious comment or statement. Tie these two together and you get a video that is not only found bby “Joe” to be “the greatest thing ever” but ALSO linked by him to his 100 friends on Youtube.com and Facebook.com. So now we hit the point where this video has the possibility of being viral. Lets say only 1/2 of Joe’s friends find it funny. Well, those 50 people that DID find it funny, link it on their page, at that point… well…. it’s going viral. Linked by friends and friends of friends ect. Next thing we know the single video that made one impression has made not only thousands, but millions of views.
Lets apply this same concept to a tv commercial, or advertisement. All you need is one impression impact millions. Now this must be something that is easily linked through a social networking site such as Facebook, Youtube, LinkedIn, ect.
Why wouldn’t a company want to reach millions of people without spending a dime? You tell me. Viral Marketing. You need it.
